Starting up FSoE of an FSoE master

The FSoE protocol (Fail Safe over EtherCAT) can be used for safe data transmission.

Startup is described in detail by way of an example. In the example, a MOVIDRIVE® modular application inverter with EtherCAT®/SBusPLUS device profile is integrated into a safe EtherCAT® network. The inverter is equipped with a MOVISAFE® CS..A safety card.

The startup of the other inverters in the MOVI‑C® modular automation system is performed in the same way.

To enable functioning FSoE communication with the MOVISAFE® CS..A safety card, the following requirements must be met:

  • The non-safe EtherCAT® communication must function without errors.
  • The higher-level F‑PLC (FSoE master) must support the iPar CRC mechanism.
  • The FSoE master must support the connection of FSoE slaves from other manufacturers:
    • Beckhoff Automation GmbH supports the connection.
    • The connection is not supported by OMRON Corporation.

The following device topology is used in the example:

  • Higher-level FSoE master EL9600 from Beckhoff Automation GmbH
  • MOVIDRIVE® modular application inverter, MDA90A single-axis module with MOVISAFE® CSS21A safety card

For configuration and startup of the devices, the following tools are used:

  • TwinCAT 3 from Beckhoff Automation GmbH with the TwinSAFE software module for the F-PLC
  • MOVISUITE® for inverters from SEW‑EURODRIVE
  • MOVISUITE® includes the Assist CS.. tool for parameterizing the safety card.
