Product description
The modular energy storage system of the MOVI‑DPS® product family allows you to configure an energy storage solution that is individually tailored to your requirements. By using energy storage modules with different capacities and voltage levels, you can adapt the electrical properties of the energy storage system to your drive system. The modular system allows you to adapt the physical shape of the energy storage system to the available space. A MOVI-DPS® EKS storage unit consists of EKM double-layer capacitor (DLC) modules that can be configured in various arrangements. Three different EKM energy storage modules are available, each with DLC cells featuring nominal capacitances of 25 F, 100 F, and 350 F. The following figure shows, as an example, one possible combination of EKM modules with 350‑F cells assembled into a MOVI-DPS® EKS storage unit in a 3×2 configuration. Multiple EKS storage units can be combined to form an EKV energy storage bundle. In addition to the example configuration in a 3×2 format shown in the following figure, other configurations of the individual EKS storage units are also possible. See chapter 5.5 Step 5: Selection of the configuration of the EKS energy storage stacks.

Energy storage systems of the MOVI-DPS® product family can be combined with devices of the Power and Energy Solutions product family. For information on available devices and software modules in this product family and their possible applications, refer to the following document: "MOVIDRIVE® modular" product manual.
The MOVI-DPS® storage unit can be used in various applications, for example:
- Storage/retrieval systems
- Mobile systems
- Machine automation
Using an energy storage system in your drive system can provide several advantages. Any generated recuperation energy can be temporarily stored and re-used. As a result, the energy consumption of your application is reduced. Commonly used braking resistors can be reduced in size or completely omitted. Depending on the design, the energy storage system can provide a large proportion of the power peaks for your drive system. This leads to a significant reduction in grid load. This reduction in peak power demand allows you to size your entire supply infrastructure, such as transformers and cables, more cost‑effectively. High-performance applications can also be operated in weak supply systems.
As an alternative to the energy storage solution of the MOVI-DPS® product family described in this documentation, SEW‑EURODRIVE offers even more powerful energy storage systems. For information on the ESS energy storage system, refer to the document: "Energy storage systems" product manual.
