Discharging an energy storage unit using a discharge resistor
There are 2 ways to discharge an MDC90A-0120.. capacitor module or an MDC92A.. energy module using a braking resistor. The braking resistor can either be connected to the brake chopper of the MDP92A.. power supply module or directly to the DC link. The advantage offered by the connection to the DC link is that a discharge can also take place if the brake chopper is not available due to a device defect or if there is no supply voltage.
When connecting a braking resistor to the DC link, make sure there is a way of connecting and disconnecting the resistor to/from the DC link manually or by using a controller. To discharge up to 2 MDC90A-0120.. capacitor modules/MDC92A.. energy modules, use the braking resistor from the following table. To discharge 3 to 4 MDC90A-0120.. capacitor modules or MDC92A.. energy modules, use two braking resistors of this type connected in series.
