Operating modes
The MDP92A.. power supply module can be operated in different operating modes, depending on the application. The use of MOVIKIT® software modules provides different functionalities in the various operating modes. SEW-EURODRIVE will assist you with project planning.
Direct mode: DirectMode
Using the MDP92A.. power supply module with controlled DC link voltage allows for regulating the DC link voltage to any value between 0 – 800 V. This way, it is possible to achieve DC link voltages that are higher or lower than those achievable with the normal MDP90A.. power supply module. If you only want to increase or decrease the DC link voltage, use the "Direct mode" operating mode.
Increasing the DC link voltage makes it possible, for instance, to boost the power and/or speed of the axes. In addition to the adjustable DC link voltage, the power supply module in combination with a SEW-EURODRIVE controller provides energy and performance data that can be used for analysis purposes.
These are the advantages of direct mode:
- The power supply module can be operated within an input voltage range of 3 × AC 200 V to 500 V.
- Variable control of DC link voltage from 0 – 800 V
- Short-term operation of drives with higher speeds

Thanks to the precise control of DC link voltage when using the MDP92A.. power supply module, you have the option of integrating an energy storage unit into your MOVIDRIVE® modular drive system.
The current that flows into the DC link via the device and the voltage of the DC link can be parameterized. Using the power supply module with controlled DC link voltage means that energy storage units of variable size can be used in the DC link.
Up to 4 MDC92A.. energy modules can be integrated into the network. Additionally, an external energy storage unit can be connected to the MDP92A.. power supply module. Load peaks of the motors can be supplied from the energy storage unit and therefore do not put a load on the supply system. Regenerative energy can also be fed back into the storage unit. The external energy storage units are connected directly to the DC link. For more information on SEW-EURODRIVE's external energy storage units, refer to the "Energy storage systems" documentation.
The MDS90A.. switched-mode power supply module can be used to supply voltage to the axis block and the external 24 V consumers. It can be supplied both with AC voltage via the line connection and with DC voltage via the DC link.
In the event of a power supply failure, the system automatically switches to supply via the DC link. The energy remaining in the energy storage unit can now be used to keep the controller supplied with voltage, to bring the axis to a controlled idle state or to carry on operating it for a certain period of time.
These are the advantages of power mode:
- Reduction of power peaks from the supply system
- Reduction of energy costs
- Short-term increase in the maximum power of the system
- Bridging power failures for a certain period of time
- Minimum conversion losses between storage unit and drive axes during energy consumption and recuperation
Power mode is particularly suited for high power demand and lower energy requirements.
