Activating the friction surfaces

When a brake is used as a holding brake, it is not usually subjected to dynamic loading. This can cause a gradual reduction in the static braking torque. As compensation, the friction surfaces can be reactivated by a targeted dynamic load. The activation process regenerates the top layer of the friction linings.

SEW‑EURODRIVE recommends paying attention to the following during activation procedures such as this:

  • Activating the friction surfaces causes wear on the brake. Perform friction surface activation as infrequently as possible in order not to reduce the service life of the lining too much.
  • Preferably activate the friction surfaces by allowing the brake to apply from a significantly reduced motor speed (< 750 min-1).
  • Activation of the friction surfaces by controlled acceleration of the motor against the closed brake is permissible, provided that the motor speed does not exceed 100 min-1 and the activation time does not exceed 5 seconds.
