Test rate
The test rate defines the frequency with which a brake test is performed. It is defined by the user for a specific machine. Applicative and standards requirements must be taken into consideration when doing so. A brake test is called up via a higher-level controller and must be ensured by the user. SEW‑EURODRIVE recommends calling up the brake test using a safety controller.
Regular call-up of a brake test
In IFA report 04/2018 "Safe drive controls with frequency inverters," the Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommends regularly performing a brake test after approx. 8 hours or one shift. The same applies to system structures in category 2 and 3.
Special feature for machines with access regulation
In machines where access to the hazard zone is safely prevented, e.g. via security doors with an active guard locking device, a brake test can be performed immediately before accessing the hazard zone. Access to the hazard zone may be granted only after a positive test result.
One-off call-up of a brake test
In addition to regular call-ups, it is advisable to execute a brake test after the following events:
- Initial startup of a machine
- After emergency stop braking
- After voltage failure
- After the machine is switched on
- After inspection, maintenance, or repair of the machine
