Braking torque definition

The braking torques of the brakes for servomotors from SEW‑EURODRIVE are defined on the basis of DIN VDE 0580. The following braking torques are distinguished:

Abbreviation according to DIN VDE 0580

Designation

Description

Characteristic value definition

M1

Dynamic

Braking torque

Torque acting upon the motor shaft with a slipping brake (brake closed)

Statistically lowest occurring value of the dynamic braking torque during emergency-stop braking

M2

Quasi-static

Braking torque

Braking torque with a slowly slipping brake

Temporal average value of the braking torque at a frictional speed of 1 m × s-1

M4,100°C

Static

Braking torque

The torque that has to be overcome in order to rotate the motor shaft from an idle state with the brake closed

Statistically lowest occurring value of the static braking torque during holding brake operation, based on a friction surface temperature of +100 °C

The use of the specified characteristic values as nominal values and as nameplate data is defined as follows for the various brake series:

The selection tables contain all of the defined characteristic values.

As part of quality control, SEW‑EURODRIVE verifies the braking torque of all BR.., BY.., and BZ.. spring‑loaded brakes delivered by means of a full final inspection at the factory.

The behavior of the friction systems is subject to physical fluctuations and changes continuously. The value recorded during final inspection is a snapshot that SEW‑EURODRIVE uses to ensure correct and error-free production.

For mechanical dimensioning, the characteristic values M1 and M4,100 °C are used. For more details, refer to Braking torques.
