Project planning procedure for brakes

Each brake from SEW‑EURODRIVE that was designed for the servomotors offers specific advantages. This gives you the opportunity to find the optimal brake solution for every type of application. The project planning information provides detailed, well‑founded guidance for selecting the optimal drive.

Based on the fundamental requirements and the characteristics of the brakes, you first make a preliminary selection. For optimal drive selection, then observe the following three project planning steps to ensure seamless system integration and trouble‑free operation:

  • Mechanical dimensioning of the brake, see Project planning
  • Mechanical dimensioning includes selecting the appropriate braking torque, verifying the resulting operating load on the brake caused by emergency‑stop events, and determining the effects on the system itself (braking distances, deceleration rates, and torque loading during the braking process).
  • Electrical dimensioning of the brake and the control environment
  • Electrical dimensioning covers the dimensioning of the power supply, switching and protective devices, and the electrical supply lines. You will find additional information in the motor catalog.
  • Brake test
  • A brake test can detect potential limitations in the functional and performance capabilities of a brake at an early stage. The information on the brake test covers the design of a brake test and its integration into the overall system, see Brake test.
