Operating modes
Energy mode: EnergyMode
A MDP90A.. power supply module is used to supply the DC link of the inverters in energy mode.
The MDE90A... DC/DC converter module connects the external energy storage unit to the DC link. The MDE90A.. DC/DC converter module is directly connected to the DC link and decouples the storage unit from its voltage. In this way, the storage unit can be designed for an extended voltage range, and does not depend on the voltage of the DC link.
The system can absorb regenerative energy from the DC link and make it available again later. A braking resistor is not required. It is possible to supply all 24-V devices via the MDS90A.. 24-V switched-mode power supply module with AC and DC supply. In this topology, too, it is possible to perform a controlled system shutdown in the event of a power failure or to bridge a power failure for a certain period of time.
The advantages of EnergyMode are:
- Decoupling of the energy storage unit from the DC link by the DC/DC converter module
- Maximum utilization of the energy storage unit due to increased voltage range
- Reduction of power peaks from the supply system
- Reduction of energy costs
- Short-term increase in the maximum power of the system
- Bridging power failures for a certain period of time
Energy mode is particularly suitable for high energy demand and lower power demand.

Direct mode: DirectMode
In combination with a DC voltage source, the MDE90A.. DC/DC converter module enables the implementation of the "Direct mode" operating mode. A local industrial DC supply system or an energy storage unit, for instance, can serve as the DC voltage source. The MDE90A.. DC/DC converter module allows for flexible control of the DC link voltage to any value between 0 and 800 V. If you want to operate the drive system on a DC voltage source, use the "Direct mode" operating mode in combination with the MDE90A DC/DC converter module.
Thanks to the variable voltage control, MDE90A.. makes it possible to increase or decrease the voltage on both sides (4-quadrant principle). By increasing the DC link voltage, for example, the power and/or speed of the axes can be increased. In addition to the adjustable DC link voltage, the MDE90A.. DC/DC converter module in combination with a SEW-EURODRIVE controller provides energy and performance data that can be used for analysis purposes.
These are the advantages of direct mode in combination with the MDE90A.. DC/DC converter module:
- Connection of the drive system to a DC voltage source, e.g. an industrial DC supply system, energy storage unit, MOVITRANS® contactless energy transfer
- The MDE90A.. DC/DC converter module can be operated within an input voltage range of DC 1 V to 800 V.
- Variable DC link voltage control from 0 – 800 V
- Short-term operation of drives with higher speeds

Power mode: PowerMode
In combination with a DC voltage source and an energy storage unit on the input end, the MDE90A.. DC/DC converter module enables the implementation of the "Power mode" operating mode. Thanks to the precise control of DC link voltage when using the MDE90A.. DC/DC converter module, you have the option of integrating an energy storage unit into your MOVIDRIVE® modular drive system.
The current that flows into the DC link via the device and the voltage of the DC link can be parameterized. Using the MDE90A.. DC/DC converter module in combination with a DC voltage source means that energy storage units of variable sizes can be used in the DC link. Up to 4 MDC92A.. energy modules can be integrated into the network. In addition, an external energy storage unit, e.g. EKV or ESS, can be connected to the MDE90A.. DC/DC converter module. The energy storage unit supplies the energy required to handle motor load peaks. These do not place a strain the supply system. In addition, regenerative energy can be fed back into the storage unit, which saves you energy. The external energy storage units are connected directly to the DC link.
The MDS90A.. 24 V switched-mode power supply module can be used to supply DC 24 V voltage to the axis block and the external 24 V consumers. It can be supplied both with AC voltage via the line connection and with DC voltage via the DC link.
In the event of a power supply failure, the system automatically switches to supply via the DC link. The energy remaining in the energy storage unit can be used to continue supplying the controller with voltage and to operate the system or vehicle for a certain period of time even without an external power supply.
These are the advantages of power mode in combination with the MDE90A.. DC/DC converter module:
- Connection of the drive system to a DC voltage source, e.g. an industrial DC supply system, energy storage unit, MOVITRANS® contactless energy transfer
- The DC/DC converter module can be operated within an input voltage range of DC 0 V to 800 V.
- Variable DC link voltage control from 0 – 800 V
- Reduction of energy costs
- Short-term operation of the system or vehicle without an external power supply
- Minimum conversion losses between the energy storage unit and the drive axes during energy consumption and recuperation
Power mode is particularly suitable for high power demand and low energy demand.
