Ventilation types

The thermally permitted load torque of the motor depends very heavily on the type of cooling in addition to the motor size and operating mode, particularly in the case of operation on a frequency inverter. A distinction is made between self-cooling and external cooling.

Fan-cooled (IC411)

Asynchronous motors from SEW‑EURODRIVE are fan-cooled as standard. In doing so, the impellers of the fan wheels generate the same air flow irrespective of the direction of rotation. The intensity of the air flow depends on the motor speed. This means that the cooling capacity of the motor fan decreases with lower motor speeds (e.g. FI-controlled drives). For this reason, you cannot keep the brake open permanently during continuous duty at low speeds without additional measures.

Forced cooling fan (IC416)

The /V or /VE forced cooling fan option is available as another ventilation type. For this option, the fan wheel is removed from the rotor shaft and replaced by a cover with an integrated active fan. The forced cooling fan is supplied externally, which means it is operated irrespective of the motor speed. Therefore no further measures are required at low speeds.

As an option, asynchronous motors from SEW-EURODRIVE are available in designs that do not have a fan wheel for self-cooling. Heat is dissipated from the motor and brake to the ambient air exclusively by free convection. Due to the greatly reduced cooling capacity, the power output of the motor is significantly reduced compared to other types of cooling or limited to short-time duty or intermittent duty.
