Limit speeds for brakes

Within the design process, the required operating speeds of the system are verified in a two‑stage check against the characteristic values of the brake or brakemotor.

  • Maximum permitted emergency-stop speed nmax,1
  • This characteristic value marks the upper limit of the speed range in which by definition the brake may be applied in compliance with the permitted braking work Wper,n during an emergency stop for the load range being used.
  • Maximum permitted operating speed nmax,0
  • This characteristic value marks the upper limit of the speed range in which the brakemotor may be operated in compliance with the mechanical strength in usual holding brake operation (meaning without an emergency stop).

Operating points at which, on the application side, brake application from speed cannot be reliably excluded must be within the speed range ≤ nMax,1.

Operating points at which brake application can be prevented on the application side using measures independent of the motor (e.g. additional external braking systems) may fall in the speed range between nMax,1 and nMax,0.

Exceeding the maximum permitted emergency-stop speed nMax,1 (even once) or the maximum operating speed nMax,0 (even for a short time) is not permitted.

Notice: The permitted operating speed of the motor may be lower than that of the brake in some cases. This must be strictly observed, particularly for explosion‑protected drives, so as not to compromise compliance with the ignition protection type.
