Braking torque definition

Project planning of brakes and safety brakes is to be carried out based on the braking torque defined by SEW‑EURODRIVE.

The nominal braking torque MB is used. By definition, the brake moment is the quasi-static braking torque M2 according to DIN VDE0580, i.e. the braking torque with a slowly slipping brake (brake closed, relative velocity between the friction components: 1 m/s) at 20 °C.

The nominal value MB is used both during brake selection and also during planning. The differences between M1 (dynamic braking torque) and M4 (static braking torque) and the nominal braking torque are taken into account by SEW‑EURODRIVE with the formulas and the calculation coefficients that are used when doing this.

The characteristic values M1 and M4 are therefore not relevant within the scope of the project planning and selection of the brake. For more extensive applicative requirements of the brake, such as carrying out a brake test, the characteristic values M1 and M4 may need to be examined and evaluated separately.

In the application, the nominal value MB is combined to enable various test and calculation steps:

  • Application factor fA for combined test of the holding and braking function
  • Output factor fbrake, output for checking the output load during emergency stop
  • Reduction factor fMmin and transmission element factor fMmax for determining the braking time, stopping distance, and braking deceleration
