IP address
The IP address is a 32 bit value that uniquely identifies a station in the network. An IP address is represented by 4 decimal numbers separated by dots.
Each decimal number stands for 1 byte (8 bits) of the address and can also be represented in binary form:
Sample IP address: 192.168.10.4 | ||
|---|---|---|
Byte | Decimal | Binary |
1 | 192 | 11000000 |
2 | 168 | 10101000 |
3 | 10 | 00001010 |
4 | 4 | 00000100 |
The IP address consists of a network address and a station address.
The network class and the subnet mask determine which part of the IP address designates the network and which part identifies the station.
