Scanning and applying devices

Setting communication settings

To set the communication settings, proceed as follows:

  1. Open the "Devices" tab.
  2. Open the “Advanced functions” menu .
  3. Select the "Communication settings" entry.
    • The "Communication settings" dialog window opens.
  4. Select the lower-level network layer via the "Network protocol type" field.
  5. Use the "Response timeout in ms" field to enter the timeout time of the network adapter when attempting to establish the communication connection. The value must be between 100 ms and 5000 ms. INFORMATION: The set value applies to all communications with the field devices (device scan, parameter, scope), but not to the endpoints.
  6. Click [Save].
Performing a device scan

Proceed as follows to perform a device scan:

INFORMATION

If you are using the EtherCAT® adapter for network communication, it is not possible to use the software and MOVISUITE® at the same time.
  • A communication link is established between the computer and the SEW-EURODRIVE device network.
  • The computer's network interface used for the device scan is configured accordingly via the Windows network settings.
  1. Click the [Device scan] button on the "Devices" tab.
    • The "Device scan" dialog window opens.
  2. Configure the device scan using the following setting fields and then click [Start scan]. INFORMATION: The configuration applies only to the device scan and has no effect on devices already added in the device list.

Setting field

Description

Devices in an Ethernet or PROFINET network

Buttons

[Add IP address]

and

[Add multiple IP addresses]

Enter IP addresses or IP address ranges (use a hyphen when specifying IP address ranges, for example 10.58.231.1 - 10.58.231.255) within your Ethernet or PROFINET industrial network that are to be scanned. Add ":port number" after the IP address to search on a specific port. INFORMATION: Devices that can be reached via different routes may be displayed several times in the results list.

Devices connected to external EtherCAT master

Buttons

[Add IP address]

and

[Add multiple IP addresses]

Enter IP addresses or IP address ranges (use a hyphen when specifying IP address ranges, for example 10.58.231.1 - 10.58.231.255) of the EtherCAT® masters that provide a configured mailbox gateway interface. SEW drives that are connected to these EtherCAT® masters can then be found and used. Add ":port number" after the IP address to search on a specific port. INFORMATION: Devices that can be reached via different routes may be displayed several times in the results list.

Broadcast scan

Use broadcast

Activate the broadcast function for finding devices within a local network. INFORMATION: Activating the broadcast function will result in an increased network load, which can cause undesirable effects. The broadcast function will not find the devices in routed networks. It is mandatory to specify an IP address range here.

Network adapter for broadcast communication

Select the network adapter of your computer for establishing the communication connection for the broadcast scan.

[Refresh] button

Update the detected network adapters.

Device filter

Include subcomponents into device scan

Use the displayed choice boxes to select which subcomponents are detected during the device scan.

INFORMATION: In IoT Suite mode, all subcomponents are deactivated by default, since not all subcomponents are supported yet by the IoT Suite. You can find out which subcomponents the IoT Suite supports in the IoT Suite white list.

Applying devices

After performing the network scan, a result list with all detected devices and subcomponents is displayed. This result list is used to select which devices and subcomponents are applied to the device list. To apply devices and subcomponents, proceed as follows:

INFORMATION

Do not access the same device in the field with multiple instances of the software. This can lead to resource shortages.
  • A device scan has been performed and the result list contains entries.
  1. Use the choice boxes to select the devices and subcomponents to be applied. If you select a subcomponent, the corresponding device is always also applied. If you select a device, however, the subcomponents are not all automatically applied. If you want to apply all displayed devices, you can skip this step and click the [Apply all] button.
  2. If needed, filter the result list using the drop-down list in the top right corner. If "Prefer fieldbus route" is selected, all detected devices are displayed. If a device has a fieldbus route and an engineering route, the fieldbus route is applied automatically. If "Only fieldbus route" or "Only engineering route" is selected, only devices that were found via the corresponding route are listed.
  3. Click the [Apply selection button].
    • The selected devices and subcomponents are applied to the device list.
