Schematic workflow for project planning

The following flow diagram illustrates the project planning procedure for drive selection. The drive consists of a gearmotor that is powered by an inverter.

Necessary information regarding the machine to be driven

  • Technical data and ambient conditions
  • Speed setting range
  • Travel cycle calculation

Calculation of the relevant application data

  • Travel diagram
  • Speeds
  • Static, dynamic torques
  • Regenerative power

Gear unit selection

  • Define the gear unit size, gear unit ratio, and gear unit design
  • Check the gear unit load
  • Check the input speed

Motor selection

  • Maximum torque
  • With dynamic drives: effective torque at medium speed
  • Maximum speed
  • Observe dynamic and thermal torque curves
  • Motor equipment (brake, plug connector, thermal motor protection, etc.)

Selection of the inverter

  • Communication selection
  • Motor/inverter assignment
  • Check whether the inverters fulfill the duration and overload requirements

Selection of the braking resistor, depending on the size of the inverter

  • Check whether the braking resistor fulfills the duration and overload requirements
  • Observe braking resistor assignment

Selection of other system components

  • Motor and supply system cables
  • Signal cables
  • EMC accessories

Selection of 24 V voltage supply

  • Determine the current demand of the 24 V voltage supply
  • Observe the requirements for the voltage tolerance

Ensure that all requirements have been met.
